Luna: Help me, I realy wanted my subject to love me and my night, and because of you they fear me.
NMM: But I just wanted to help.
Luna: Than stop helping, I NOT WANT TO SEE YOU EVER AGAIN !

NMM: Bbbbb but I just wanted to help, where did I go wrong, sniff....
When Luna felt that Celestia and her day is most importand when she and her night not, that Celestia get all the Love, all decysions are made by her, NMM was created as a Luna stronger side.
So practicly NMM wanted to help Luna realizing her dream, since she had enoght corrage to stand up again Celestia ( somethink Luna was afraid to do ).
The problem with NMM is that her logic is blind, she wanted enternal night so overshinne Celestia day and give Luna more attention and love, but she could not see that rebeling again Celestia and forcing cold night forever will just spread fear and kill her subjects overtime.
WHen Celestia banish NMM/Luna, NMM take full control over Luna, so practicly it was NMM who endured 1000 years of banishment when Luna was in some sort of sleeping stage.
And for someone imprisoned for 1000 years, I must say she went very easy ( she did not killed Celestia, probably just banished her, she did not burned ponnyvile or any other town as revange, all she did was to put enternal night,, like she still thought it will help Luna realize her dream ).
As alicorn NMM would easy anihilate mane 6, but instead she deploy some traps what goal were more of scaring the mane 6 from finding elements than killing tham.
So yes, in my opinion NMM did not had goals, rage and desire for revange on her own, just a goal to realize Luna dream by all cost without carrying about consequences.
If NMM would get a body on her own and get a chance to talk with Luna after all that happen, I m sure Luna would hate NMM for everythink she has done, when NMM would be confused and sad that she did not helped Luna.
Somethink like Derpy doing alot of damage but having good intentions ( " I just not know what went wrong " ).
